The taste is herbal and less spicy than black and white peppercorns. There are white, black, red and green peppercorns. Still, they are all coming from the same pepper-plant (Piper nigrum). It is probably the most used herbal in this world. A tropical plant that is used and known since ancient times, especially in the Middle East. The most important material in pepper is piperine, that gives the sharp taste. Pepper has several health benefits: It is a source of vitamin C, an powerful antioxidant.
